Dr. Suhas Haldipurkar: A Visionary Eye Surgeon Who Helped Shape Modern Cataract Care

In the world of ophthalmology, few names carry the weight of experience, service and surgical excellence the way Dr. Suhas Haldipurkar does. A pioneering cataract surgeon, respected teacher, institution builder and humanitarian, Dr. Haldipurkar’s journey stands as a remarkable example of how one doctor’s vision can transform eye care for generations.

As the Medical Director of Laxmi Eye Institute, Founder Director of Laxmi Eye Institute, and Chief Trustee of Laxmi Charitable Trust, Dr. Haldipurkar has spent more than four decades building a legacy rooted in clinical precision, advanced cataract surgery, teaching and accessible eye care. His name is strongly associated with the advancement of phacoemulsification cataract surgery in India, and he is widely regarded as a respected phaco teacher.

Dr. Haldipurkar’s medical journey began with his graduation from Karnataka Medical College, Hubli, followed by post-graduation in Ophthalmology in Mumbai. His pursuit of excellence took him beyond India’s borders. In 1989, he travelled to Japan for a fellowship in anterior segment surgeries under Dr. Akira Momose and later to Germany for advanced training in cataract surgery and phacoemulsification under Dr. Fredrick Rentsch. He also underwent intensive refractive surgery training in the United States. These international exposures helped him bring advanced surgical thinking and refined techniques into Indian ophthalmic practice at a time when eye surgery was rapidly evolving.

In 1981, Dr. Haldipurkar began private practice in Panvel. What started as a clinical practice gradually grew into a mission. Seeing the need for affordable, sustainable and high-quality eye care for rural and underprivileged patients, he began a once-a-week charitable OPD in 1996. The response and need were so significant that it eventually led to the establishment of Laxmi Charitable Trust Eye Hospital in 2000.

The charitable initiative went far beyond consultation. Through outreach camps, patient transport, surgery support, medicines, meals and post-operative care, Laxmi Charitable Trust created a model of compassionate eye care for patients who may otherwise have remained untreated. From 56 free surgeries in 1996, the charitable work grew to more than 6,000 free surgeries in a year, reflecting the scale and seriousness of the mission.

Alongside his humanitarian work, Dr. Haldipurkar has played a major role in professional training. Under his leadership, Laxmi Eye Institute developed one of the long-running cataract surgical training programmes, including SICS and phacoemulsification training. Hundreds of doctors from India and abroad have benefited from the institute’s structured surgical teaching, one-to-one training approach and exposure to modern cataract technologies.

His contribution has not been limited to the operating theatre. Dr. Haldipurkar has been an active contributor to ophthalmic discussions, scientific papers, surgical videos and academic exchange. His research profile includes work connected with cataract surgery, refractive surgery, intraocular lenses, astigmatism, biometry and related ophthalmic fields. His association with peer-reviewed ophthalmology literature further strengthens his standing as both a clinician and academic contributor.

Recognition has followed naturally. The Asia-Pacific Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons lists Dr. Suhas Haldipurkar among its APACRS Certified Educator surgeons, an honour linked with significant contributions to ophthalmic development and skills transfer in the Asia-Pacific region. Such recognition places him among respected cataract and refractive surgery educators across the region.

In 2024, another major milestone was added to the Laxmi Eye legacy when Centre For Sight announced a strategic collaboration with Laxmi Eye Hospital in Maharashtra. The announcement described Laxmi Eye Hospital as a trusted eye-care provider with a legacy of more than three decades, serving over 2.5 million patients across Panvel, Kharghar, Dombivli and Kamothe. It also highlighted Dr. Haldipurkar’s visionary leadership and more than 40 years of experience.

The collaboration marked not just an institutional development, but also a recognition of the foundation built by Dr. Haldipurkar over decades. It demonstrated how a regional eye-care institution, created with dedication and clinical discipline, could evolve into a major centre of trust and excellence.

Today, Dr. Suhas Haldipurkar’s legacy is visible in three powerful ways: in the patients whose sight has been restored, in the young surgeons who have learned under his guidance, and in the institution that continues to expand access to modern eye care. His work reflects a rare combination of surgical skill, teaching commitment and social responsibility.

At a time when healthcare is often measured only by technology and infrastructure, Dr. Haldipurkar’s story is a reminder that the true measure of a medical legacy lies in lives changed. From advanced cataract surgery to charitable outreach, from training doctors to building institutions, he has dedicated his career to one clear purpose: bringing quality vision care within reach of more people.

For Navi Mumbai and beyond, Dr. Suhas Haldipurkar remains more than an eminent ophthalmologist. He is a builder of institutions, a teacher of surgeons, a pioneer in cataract care and a doctor whose work continues to bring light into countless lives.
